How Our Sober Living Admissions Process Works, Step by Step
Intake is simple and personal — no long online application, no waiting on hold. Most inquiries move from first call to a clear answer within a day or two.
- 1. Reach out. Call or text me at 617-763-2716, email DougC@TheGraduateHouse.com, or use our inquiry form. A parent, partner, counselor, or the man himself can make first contact.
- 2. Have a confidential conversation. We'll talk honestly, without pressure, about where you are in recovery and whether our home fits. Your questions matter as much as ours.
- 3. Assess fit and readiness. Together we weigh commitment to 12-step recovery, readiness to live substance-free, and bed availability. We'd rather be honest about fit than fill a bed.
- 4. Move in. Once aligned, we set your move-in date, cover the house guidelines, introduce our two live-in house managers, and help you settle in.
Who Belongs Here: Is Abington Graduate House the Right Fit?
Our residents are men done fighting recovery alone and ready to build a life in it. You don't need everything figured out — but you do need to want it.
You're likely a strong fit if you are:
- Committed to a 12-step program and willing to work it
- Ready to live completely substance-free
- Coming out of detox, treatment, or another sober living and looking for a stable next step
- Prepared to be part of a household — respectful, honest, and accountable
Still weighing options? Our how to choose a sober house guide and our sober living vs. halfway house comparison can help.
House Expectations: Accountability Without Micromanagement
A calm, beautiful home only stays that way when everyone carries their weight. Our expectations are clear and the same for every man:
- Active 12-step involvement — meetings, a sponsor, real effort
- A substance-free home — no alcohol or non-prescribed substances, period
- Drug and alcohol testing — random and routine
- Adult responsibility — no boarding-school chore charts; grown men keep shared spaces respectable and show up for the household
- Respect for managers and housemates — our two live-in managers support you, not police you
This is structure with dignity — a high standard that makes lasting recovery possible and protects the quality of our home and environment.
How Long Men Typically Stay
There's no rigid timeline. Recovery isn't a 30-day transaction, and the men who do best stay long enough to build real footing — commonly several months or more. We'll talk openly about a healthy length of stay, and we never push a man out because a calendar says so. For the finances, see our sober living cost in Massachusetts page.
Our Approach to Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)
Recovery looks different for every man, and medication decisions belong between a resident and his own licensed providers. Abington Graduate House is non-clinical, peer-supported housing — we don't provide, prescribe, or manage medical care — but we welcome men on physician-directed medication-assisted treatment and consider each situation individually. If MAT is part of your care, raise it during your confidential conversation.
Families We Welcome from Across the South Shore & Greater Boston

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I apply to Abington Graduate House?
It starts with a call, text, email, or inquiry form — reach me, Doug, at 617-763-2716 or DougC@TheGraduateHouse.com. We'll talk confidentially about your recovery and goals, assess fit and bed availability, and, if we're aligned, arrange your move-in. No long application.
Is my inquiry really confidential?
Yes. Your inquiry is 100% confidential, and reaching out commits you to nothing. Whether you're a resident-to-be or a worried family member, your conversation stays private.
Do you accept men on medication-assisted treatment (MAT)?
We welcome men on physician-directed MAT and review each situation individually. Because we're non-clinical, peer-supported housing, not a medical program, medication decisions stay between you and your own licensed providers. Just raise it during your confidential conversation.
How long do men usually stay?
There's no fixed timeline — the men who do best stay long enough to build real stability, often several months or more. We'll talk openly about a healthy length of stay for you.
Is sober living the same as rehab or a treatment center?
No. Abington Graduate House is completing MASH certification, non-clinical, peer-supported sober living — a recovery residence, not a detox, rehab, or medical treatment program. Many men come after completing treatment and want a structured, substance-free home to build on. Our sober living vs. halfway house page explains further.
How much does it cost?
Costs depend on room type and availability, and we'll share current rates when you reach out. For a transparent overview of the finances, see our sober living cost in Massachusetts page.
Ready to talk to a real person?
